Municipal Authorities Advocate Financial Support for Metro Expansion in Urban Area

Sunderland city councillors are urging immediate funding for the expansion of the Metro, emphasizing the need to connect areas such as Hendon, Grangetown, and Ryhope. In a unified effort, the council plans to communicate with the Secretary of State for Transport, seeking support for the proposed Metro extension and the reopening of the Leamside Line. The expansion, backed by Sunderland City Council, aligns with the vision of extending the Metro to Washington.

The funding initiative is closely tied to the Network North program, tapping into the £36 billion earmarked from the cancellation of the Northern leg of HS2. Liberal Democrat councilors spearheaded the drive to secure funds, successfully passing a motion during a full council meeting. The motion underscored the equal significance of expanding the Metro throughout Sunderland and reopening the Leamside Line to enhance the city's vibrancy.

Councillor Ciaran Morrissey, representing Hendon, stressed the importance of presenting a compelling business case to secure investment, emphasizing the specificity of the city's needs. On a similar note, Labour's Michael Mordey, also representing Hendon, expressed frustration at the historical lack of government support for the council's transport aspirations. He urged the government to provide the necessary tools and funding, asserting that the council already possesses plans and ambition for the envisioned projects.Sunderland city councillors are urging immediate funding for the expansion of the Metro, emphasizing the need to connect areas such as Hendon, Grangetown, and Ryhope.
