Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has been issued a 24-hour ultimatum to surrender his passport amidst an ongoing probe into the 2023 siege orchestrated by his supporters on Brazil's Congress. Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes authorized the order, and Bolsonaro, who was in the US during the attack, has affirmed his compliance through his legal representative. Bolsonaro has consistently claimed to be a target of what he terms a legal witch hunt.
Having returned to Brazil in March 2023, two months post the congressional storming, the ex-president now faces multiple investigations. In June, he received an eight-year ban from running for office due to baseless allegations against Brazil's electronic voting system. The focal point of interest remains the investigation into the January 8, 2023 events when enraged supporters, dissatisfied with Bolsonaro's narrow election loss to his left-wing rival, stormed Congress, the highest court in the land and the official residence of the presidency in Brasília.
Brazil's federal police, as part of an operation targeting a "criminal organization involved in the attempted coup," executed four arrest warrants and conducted searches at numerous locations. While specific names of those arrested were not provided, media reports suggest the detention of two former Bolsonaro advisers, Filipe Martins and Marcelo Câmara. Over the past year, more than 1,400 individuals have faced charges related to their alleged roles in the riots, with only a handful having been convicted thus far.
