Renowned country music icon Toby Keith, celebrated for chart-topping hits that resonated across Nashville, has passed away at the age of 62. The confirmation of his demise came from his publicist to NPR and was subsequently posted on his official website and X, the former Twitter.
Keith's website conveyed, "Toby Keith passed peacefully on February 5, surrounded by his family, after bravely facing his battle with grace and courage. During this time, we kindly request respecting the privacy of his family."
In 2022, the country star disclosed on social media that he had been undergoing treatments for stomach cancer, including chemotherapy and radiation since the fall of 2021. Despite the challenging journey, he expressed optimism, stating, "So far, so good. I need time to breathe, recover, and relax."
Hailing from Oklahoma City, Keith's musical journey started while working in the oil fields after high school. His focus shifted entirely to music, and his breakthrough arrived when renowned producer Harold Shedd discovered his demo tape.
The chart-topping single "Should've Been a Cowboy" marked Keith's debut in 1993, becoming the most-played country song of the decade with over 3 million radio plays. His catalog includes hits like "Red Solo Cup," "How Do You Like Me Now?!" and the duet with Willie Nelson, "Beer For My Horses."
Despite its polarizing nature, the song elevated Keith's visibility and sparked a public feud with Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks.
Among his numerous accolades, Keith received the Academy of Country Music's Male Vocalist of the Year in 2001, and Artist of the Decade at the American Country Awards in 2011.
Tributes from fellow country stars poured in following the news of Keith's passing. Carrie Underwood expressed, "Saddle up the horses, Jesus, 'cause a true blue COWBOY just made his ride up to heaven!" Jason Aldean shared his condolences, remarking, "Today is a sad day for Country music and its fans. Toby was a huge presence in our business and someone we all looked up to and respected." Zach Bryan reflected on his personal connection, saying, "Too many rides in my old man's car listening to Toby Keith. Really hard thing to hear. Rest in peace friend; we love you."
