In a surprising turn of events, the Green Bay Packers have opted for a change in leadership as they step into the 2024 season, signaling the end of the Joe Barry era. The team officially announced the departure of defensive coordinator Joe Barry after a three-season tenure.
Expressing gratitude for Barry's dedication and contributions, head coach Matt LaFleur acknowledged the difficulty of such decisions. LaFleur praised Barry as one of the finest individuals he has worked with in the league, highlighting the challenging nature of parting ways with a respected figure.
Joe Barry's coaching journey commenced in 1994 when, as a 24-year-old USC graduate assistant, he took his first steps into the world of coaching. Barry's NFL breakthrough came in 2000 with the San Francisco 49ers, and over the next two decades, he navigated through roles with the Detroit Lions (2007-08), Washington (2015-16), and various positions with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers, and Los Angeles Rams before assuming the role of Green Bay's defensive coordinator in 2021.
The Packers' defensive performance experienced fluctuations under Barry's guidance. The team boasted a solid ninth rank in total defense in 2021 but saw a dip to 17th in 2022. Despite improvements in certain areas, the 2023 season witnessed a persistent 17th position in total defense, accompanied by a notable struggle in run defense, ranking 28th.
December proved to be a challenging stretch for Green Bay, with defensive lapses leading to significant point concessions. Noteworthy instances included a loss to the New York Giants, where they gave up 24 points, a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers where Baker Mayfield achieved a perfect passer rating, and a 30-point allowance against a struggling Carolina Panthers offense led by Bryce Young.
However, the team showed resilience in the final weeks of the regular season, allowing only 19 total points and securing a wild card upset over the Dallas Cowboys with two interceptions, including a Darnell Savage pick-six. Although the Packers narrowly missed another playoff upset in the divisional round, falling 24-21 against the top-seeded San Francisco 49ers.
With Joe Barry's departure, Matt LaFleur is set to embark on the search for his third defensive coordinator since assuming the role of Packers head coach in 2019, ushering in a new chapter for Green Bay's defensive strategy.
